What is your health worth?

What value do you place on your health?

Most people when asked what was important to them they ranked their family and health as the top 1st and 2nd respectively out of 9. It’s not surprising that family and health topped the list for without your health you don’t have any of the rest. So what value do you place on your health?

First let’s dive into what value means. It is defined as "The regard that something is held to deserve, the importance, worth or usefulness of something."

Why do I start with this sentence, because I want to know how much you value your health? What is on the top of your list? I recall while finishing up graduate school we talked about value as it relates to the health care system and we came up with value is cost vs. ROI. For example let’s say you were hiking and twisted your ankle. You can still walk but it is sore and since it hurts a little you decide to go to your primary care provider. Well they charge you a co pay, run you through waiting an 1 hour to meet with your provider for 5 minutes, do a few tests, run you through an x ray and then meet to tell you to ice it and go the physical therapy. Well how valuable was that? It cost you time off work, time away from family, and really an image that wasn’t necessary. Now I am not saying if you sprain your ankle don’t go to get it looked at, talk to your MD or even get an X-ray. I am just saying that wasn’t as valuable as comparing it to perhaps a visit with a movement specialist first where you could have avoided all that waisted time and money. Anytime you talk about value you should consider cost.

It is estimated that 1 in 2 Americans live with a musculoskeletal disorder. If you take back pain for example. Nearly 70-80% of people will experience back pain in their lifetime. Low back pain costs 87.6 billion dollars annually. If you take the time that you have to spend off work, etc. it is a significant burden for you.

So if back pain is such a financial obligation why don't we put more time into prevention?

It is said an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Most insurances don't want to put money into prevention for fear of the unknown. Well we do know that physical therapy as a first line of treatment helps decrease that financial burden. The nice part about being a part of Mtn Physio because it is cash based, is the treatment is geared around you and your goals. It is geared around prevention and evidence does support Physical Therapy can help prevent the chronic musculoskeletal injuries. One reason I like this model of care is you can get direct time with the therapist and focus on what you want to accomplish for the length of the visit. In an essence you will find more value with Mtn Physio as you add a Physical Therapist to your health watch that is an expert and board certified in musculoskeletal and orthopedic injuries and prevention to keep you healthy for your life. Receiving frequent health evaluations by a Physical Therapist is important to help you work on your goals and help you stay active.

Now I see a lot of Mtn Athletes and I know the importance and what is required to go and summit peak after peak season after season. That is why signing up for an evaluation is the first step. Now I am from the mindset and rightly so as we talked about value that it takes a handful of visits to get you better. Sometimes it is one, but most the time it is a few visits before we get to hone in on what will get you better. Not only do regular visits help but following up with and staying accountable to yourself and others will help you succeed.

That is why I have created multiple subscription based programs and bundled visits. From my experience it is somewhere between 4 and 6 visits that most people need to be back to about 90-100%. Now what I see happen all to often is a digression. Attending PT is nice to get that feeling of guilt meaning if you don’t do your exercises or program and you show up then you will feel guilty. Well Mtn Physio is different but the fact of the matter that accountability still plays a significant role in recovery or prevention. To help with this I have created a subscription based program. Sign up for an evaluation in any form and you will be eligible to work into our SEASON PREP class. This is a weekly class that is roughly 30 minutes long where you will be enrolled in a private Facebook group, have regular interactions with Dr. Preston Ward, receive literature, work out, engage in multiple WODS, be entered in for raffles, discuss form and technique and have a specific group and provider to help you stay accountable. After all the goal of this program is to keep you successful to prepare for “YOUR SEASON,” no matter what that looks like. You can be a Mtn Athlete or someone looking to just move more. You can be a professional archer or a Mom/Dad who needs a little time to themselves. It is literally a program for everyone!
